High Efficiency of your Tampa Bay Air Conditioning

December 3rd, 2010

If you live in Tampa, you most likely have an air conditioner in your home.  There are ways to ensure your air conditioner is highly efficient.  This will save you money in the long run.

Firstly, set a fix temperature for the thermostat both when there are people in the house and when there aren’t.  It is a mistake to think that lowering the temperature of the thermostat will get the air conditioner to drop the temperature faster than just setting it at the temperature that you want.  So you may want to fix the temperature at 75 degrees when people are in the room and a little higher when there aren’t.

Secondly, use a ceiling fan in conjunction with your air conditioner.  By having your fan on, you can set your thermostat at a higher temperature and thus reduce the energy consumption of your air conditioner.  At times, you may want to have just the fan on without the air conditioner to save even more cost.

Another good practice is to draw the curtains close on windows that face the sun.  In the evenings, you can open the windows and curtains to allow hot air to go out of the house.  But when the sun is up, you should close the windows and draw the curtains.  In the same way, use a ventilator fan to draw out hot air from rooms like the kitchen when cooking.  Instead of a ventilator fan, a standing floor fan will do.

A ventilator fan is also helpful in areas of your house where you place your clothes dryer or dishwasher.  These machines produce heat when they are run.  If such a fan is not possible, you should at least limit using these machines to the early mornings or evenings when the temperature of the day has fallen.

You should keep your air conditioner away from the sun’s direct rays.  The ideal direction for the central air conditioning unit is north.  If this is not possible, try planting some tall or shady trees such that their shadows fall on the air conditioning unit when the sun is shining.

Finally, use a dehumidifier to lessen the humidity in the house.  This will make you feel more comfortable.  You may even be able to set the temperature of your air conditioner higher if you use a dehumidifier.
